Question

If p : q = 4 : 1, find (5p + 3q) : (5p − 3q).

This question was previously asked in
SSC CGL 2025 Tier 2 Paper 1 Question Paper (19-Jan-2026)
The correct answer is

23 : 17

Since \(p : q = 4 : 1\), take \(p = 4\) and \(q = 1\) (any pair in this ratio works).

\(5p + 3q = 5(4) + 3(1) = 20 + 3 = 23\)

\(5p - 3q = 5(4) - 3(1) = 20 - 3 = 17\)

Hence \((5p + 3q) : (5p - 3q) = 23 : 17\).
