RRB JE 2025 CBT 2 Mechanical and Allied Engg Question Paper English (2-Jul-2026) (Shift-1)
The correct answer is

has a lower weight for the same strength

For compression members (columns/struts), the critical failure mode is buckling. The Euler buckling load Pcr = π²EI/Le² depends on the moment of inertia I. The I-section efficiently distributes material far from the centroidal axis, giving a high moment of inertia (and high radius of gyration r = √(I/A)) relative to the cross-sectional area. This means for the same compressive strength, an I-section uses less material/lower weight than a solid rectangular or circular section.
