Question

Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.

Rahul's wife knows that Rahul loves to cook. So for his birthday she decided to get a cookbook for him. She presented it to him in the morning. Rahul was so delighted that he told her that he would prepare his birthday dinner himself. They invited Rahul's two friends, Mohit and Anshul, for the party.

Rahul first prepared tomato soup. He put in tomatoes, carrots and onions in the soup with some salt and pepper. The recipe called for some cream to be put on the soup. So, Rahul took some fresh cream from the milk in the fridge, whipped it and put it on the soup. His mother, who was also there, just loved the soup.

For the main course, Rahul prepared peas and paneer which he bought during the day from the supermarket. The peas and paneer dish was cooked in tomato gravy according to the cookbook with a lot of different spices. His friends liked this dish the best. Apart from this, Rahul also prepared some cucumber, onion and peanut salad to go with the peas and paneer dish and pooris. It was the easiest for him to make. Rahul's wife loved the salad the best. Finally, Rahul also prepared a sweet dish to be served as dessert after the dinner. It was kheer, the traditional Indian dish, made of rice cooked in milk with some roasted nuts for garnishing. Everybody enjoyed the kheer after the dinner.

The correct answer is He whipped the fresh cream from the milk.

Analyzing the Passage for the Answer

The question asks how Rahul managed to get the cream for the soup based on the provided passage about his birthday dinner preparations.

To answer this, we need to carefully read the part of the passage that mentions the soup and the cream. The passage states:

  • "Rahul first prepared tomato soup."
  • "He put in tomatoes, carrots and onions in the soup with some salt and pepper."
  • "The recipe called for some cream to be put on the soup."
  • "So, Rahul took some fresh cream from the milk in the fridge, whipped it and put it on the soup."

This sequence of events explicitly describes how Rahul obtained and prepared the cream for his tomato soup.

Evaluating the Options

Let's examine each given option in light of the information from the passage:

  1. He just took it out of the fridge.

The passage does mention that the fresh cream was taken from the milk in the fridge. However, it also specifies the process of whipping it. So, simply taking it out of the fridge is only part of the process described.

  2. He bought it from the supermarket.

The passage mentions Rahul buying peas and paneer from the supermarket during the day. It does not mention him buying cream from the supermarket.

  3. His wife got it for him.

The passage states that Rahul's wife got him a cookbook for his birthday. It does not mention her getting the cream for him.

  4. He whipped the fresh cream from the milk.

This option directly matches the description in the passage: "Rahul took some fresh cream from the milk in the fridge, whipped it and put it on the soup." He obtained the cream by separating and whipping it from the milk he had.

Determining the Correct Method

Based on the detailed description in the passage, Rahul did not simply take pre-made cream from the fridge, buy it, or receive it from his wife. He specifically obtained the cream by taking "fresh cream from the milk in the fridge" and then "whipped it" before adding it to the soup. Therefore, the most accurate description of how he managed to get the cream is that he whipped it from the milk.

Conclusion

The passage clearly states the process Rahul followed to get the cream for his soup. By extracting and whipping fresh cream from the milk, he prepared it as required by the recipe.

Action Described in Passage Related to Cream? Matches Option?
Took fresh cream from milk in fridge Yes Partially matches Option 1, part of Option 4
Whipped it Yes Matches Option 4
Bought peas and paneer from supermarket No Does not match Option 2
Wife got cookbook No Does not match Option 3

Revision Table: Understanding Cream Preparation

Let's review the steps Rahul took according to the passage regarding the cream:

  • Needed cream for soup recipe.
  • Found fresh cream from milk in the fridge.
  • Whipped the fresh cream.
  • Put the whipped cream on the soup.

This confirms that whipping the cream from the available milk was the method used.

Additional Information: Fresh Cream vs. Whipping Cream

In cooking, "fresh cream" often refers to cream with a lower fat content than heavy whipping cream. However, depending on the region or context, fresh cream taken from milk can still be whipped, especially if it's the upper layer skimmed from milk that has been allowed to settle. The passage uses the term "fresh cream from the milk," implying it was likely separated from the milk he had on hand, then whipped to the desired consistency for the soup garnish.
