Question

Which of the following statements are correct in relation to the extraction of metals? The metals which lie high in the reactivity series are extracted by the electrolysis of molten ore.

The metals of medium reactivity series exist as sulphides and carbonates in nature. It is easier to extract a metal from its sulphide in comparison to oxides.

RRB Group D 2024 Question Paper PDF (27-Dec-2025) (Shift 2)
The correct answer is

Only a and b

Metals placed high in the electrochemical activity series (such as sodium, magnesium, and aluminium) are very reactive and cannot be reduced by carbon or carbon monoxide because they bond too strongly with oxygen. These metals are extracted by electrolytic reduction — passing electric current through their molten salts or aqueous solutions.

Statements (a) and (b) are correct regarding these highly reactive metals and their extraction method. Statement (c) describes a method applicable to metals in the middle of the activity series (like iron), which are extracted by reduction with carbon (coke), so (c) is not universally true for metals high in the series.

The correct answer is D: Only a and b.
