A weed seed bank is the reserve of viable weed seeds present in the soil surface or subsurface layers. It develops through seed rain from standing weeds and may persist for several years depending on species dormancy and soil conditions. The seed bank ensures continuous weed emergence, even after weed removal.

Strategies to reduce weed seed bank:

Prevent seed set: Timely weeding before flowering prevents replenishment of the seed bank.

Crop rotation: Breaks weed cycles by altering habitat and competition.

Mulching: Crop residues or plastic films suppress weed seed germination.

Tillage practices: Deep tillage buries seeds beyond germination depth; shallow tillage exposes seeds to predation.

Stale seedbed technique: Pre-irrigation induces germination, followed by weed destruction before crop sowing.

Cover crops: Smother weeds, reduce seed rain, and suppress emergence.

Biological control: Use of insects or pathogens reduces seed viability.

Herbicide application: Pre-emergence herbicides prevent germination, while selective post-emergence reduce seed set.

Harvest weed seed control: Mechanical systems collect or destroy weed seeds at harvest.

By integrating these measures, the size and longevity of soil weed seed banks can be minimized, reducing future infestation.
