Differentiate between agrisilviculture and agrisilvipasture system. Give suitable examples of component crops.

This question was previously asked in
UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Agrisilviculture is a system where agricultural crops are cultivated along with trees on the same land. It improves soil fertility, reduces erosion, and provides diversified income. For example, combining wheat or maize with tree species like poplar, eucalyptus, or neem.

Agrisilvipasture integrates agriculture, forestry, and pasture together. It supports crop production, tree growth, and grazing animals on the same land, thereby ensuring food, fodder, fuelwood, and timber simultaneously. A practical example is combining sorghum or bajra with trees like Acacia or Leucaena and fodder grasses like Stylosanthes or Napier.

Thus, agrisilvipasture is more comprehensive as it integrates livestock in addition to crops and trees, while agrisilviculture focuses mainly on crops with trees.
