Rice–wheat: Dominant in Indo-Gangetic alluvial soils under assured irrigation.

Rice–rice: Practised in deltaic regions of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, with continuous irrigation.

Rice–mustard / rice–potato–wheat: Found in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal with fertile alluvial soils.

Wheat–maize / wheat–sugarcane: Practised in irrigated areas of Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh.

Maize–wheat / maize–mustard: Common in alluvial soils with moderate irrigation in Bihar and eastern states.

Millet-based systems:

Pearl millet–pulses (cowpea, green gram): Grown in arid and semi-arid sandy soils of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Gujarat.

Sorghum–pulses (pigeon pea, chickpea): Practised in black soils of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka under limited irrigation.

Finger millet–groundnut / finger millet–pulses: Predominant in red soils of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

Maize–pulses / maize–vegetables: Common in hilly soils of Himachal Pradesh and Northeast India with rainfed conditions.

Cropping system diversity ensures risk minimization, soil fertility enhancement, and efficient resource utilization. Distribution depends on soil fertility, water availability, and climatic adaptability of cereals and millets.
