Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) are pollution-control devices used to control air pollution. Their specific job is to remove suspended particulate matter — fly ash, dust, smoke and soot — from the exhaust gases of industries and thermal power plants before those gases are discharged into the atmosphere.
The working principle is electrostatic. As the dirty gas passes through the unit, high-voltage discharge electrodes impart an electrical charge to the tiny suspended particles. These now-charged particles drift toward oppositely charged collecting plates, stick to them, and are periodically knocked off (rapped) and gathered in hoppers. The cleaned gas, largely free of particulates, then exits — which is why the correct answer is air pollution.
The other options describe pollution types tackled by entirely different technologies: water pollution is treated by effluent and sewage treatment plants, soil pollution is addressed by methods such as bioremediation and soil washing, and noise pollution is reduced using sound barriers, silencers and acoustic insulation. None of these employ an electrostatic precipitator, which acts only on airborne particles.
