Question

Discuss the sensitive stages for drought and high temperature in cereals and pulses.

This question was previously asked in
UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Crop vulnerability to drought and high temperature varies by growth stage.

Cereals:

Germination and seedling stage: Drought delays establishment.

Tillering stage (wheat, rice): Moisture stress reduces tiller number.

Flowering and anthesis: Most sensitive stage; drought or heat causes pollen sterility.

Grain filling: Stress reduces kernel weight and yield.

Pulses:

Pre-flowering stage: Moisture stress delays vegetative growth.

Flowering stage: Drought or heat causes flower drop and poor pod set.

Pod filling stage: Stress reduces seed size and number.

Thus, flowering and reproductive phases are most critical for both cereals and pulses under climatic stress.
