Discuss the role of ovarian hormones in female reproduction.

UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Ovarian hormones, estrogen and progesterone, act as the chief conductors of female reproduction, orchestrating the complex cycles of fertility and pregnancy. Estrogen, mainly secreted by the ovarian follicles, plays a central role in initiating puberty by shaping female secondary sexual characteristics such as breast development, distribution of body fat, and the onset of the menstrual cycle. During the follicular phase of the cycle, estrogen stimulates the growth and thickening of the endometrium, preparing the uterus for a potential embryo. It also regulates the release of luteinizing hormone (LH), triggering ovulation and the release of a mature egg.

Progesterone, on the other hand, is primarily secreted by the corpus luteum after ovulation. Its major role lies in supporting and maintaining pregnancy. It sustains the thickened endometrium, creating a nourishing environment for the implantation and growth of the embryo. Progesterone also prevents uterine contractions that could disrupt pregnancy and inhibits further ovulation during this period. In addition, it stimulates mammary gland development, preparing the breasts for milk production and breastfeeding after childbirth.

Both hormones function by binding to specific receptors in target tissues, influencing gene expression and regulating cellular activities within the uterus, ovaries, and mammary glands. Their balance is crucial—any disturbance can lead to reproductive disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), infertility, menstrual irregularities, or the discomforts associated with menopause.

Together, estrogen and progesterone ensure the seamless transition from follicle growth to ovulation, implantation, pregnancy, and lactation. Their synchronized actions highlight their indispensable role not only in female fertility but also in maintaining overall reproductive health.
