India, China, and Nepal share deep historical, cultural, and economic linkages, making trilateral economic cooperation both logical and potentially transformative. India can play a central role in initiating such engagement, provided it balances opportunities with sensitivities.

Nepal’s geography offers a natural bridge between India and China. As a landlocked country, it depends heavily on India for transit, trade, and infrastructure, while also deepening ties with China through the Belt and Road Initiative. India, with its geographic proximity, cultural affinity, and long-standing partnership with Nepal, is uniquely positioned to mediate, align, and expand trilateral frameworks.

India’s potential role rests on several pillars. First, it can promote connectivity by integrating road, rail, and energy grids across the three countries, boosting trade and people-to-people ties. Second, India can encourage Nepal’s transformation into a hub of cross-border trade by facilitating logistics corridors that connect Chinese markets to South Asia. Third, India can enhance cooperation in hydropower development, agriculture, and tourism, sectors where all three have strong complementarities.

At the same time, India must ensure that engagement does not compromise its security or sovereignty concerns, particularly regarding Chinese strategic influence in Nepal. By focusing on transparent, inclusive, and development-oriented projects, India can assure Nepal of genuine partnership while keeping cooperation balanced.

If managed prudently, trilateral engagement could reduce mistrust, foster interdependence, and transform the subregion into an integrated economic space. India’s proactive role as facilitator and stabilizer is crucial for translating this possibility into reality.
