In series with the load
An ammeter (multimeter set to current) must be connected in series with the load.
Current is the same through all elements of a series path, so placing the meter in series lets the whole load current pass through it and be measured.
It has a very low internal resistance; connecting it in parallel or across the supply would create a near short-circuit and damage the meter.
