Question

A sum of money triples itself in 12 years when the principal and compound interest are added. In how many years will it become nine times the sum?

The correct answer is

24 years

Under compound interest, A = P(1 + r/100)n, so the growth factor multiplies over equal periods.

Given P(1 + r/100)12 = 3P, so (1 + r/100)12 = 3.

Nine times the sum: (1 + r/100)n = 9 = 3²
= [(1 + r/100)12]²
= (1 + r/100)24
n = 24

Check: the sum becomes 3 times in the first 12 years and 3 × 3 = 9 times after another 12 years, that is 24 years in all.

Hence, 24 years.
