The correct answer is

Both [A] and [R] are true and [R] is the correct explanation of [A]

During the south west monsoon (June to September) the Arabian Sea branch brings heavy rain to the western slopes of the Western Ghats, but Tamil Nadu on the leeward side receives little rain and stays largely dry.

Tamil Nadu lies in the rain shadow of the Arabian Sea branch, and the Bay of Bengal branch moves north-eastward roughly parallel to its coast, so it also does not shed much rain over the state.

Both statements are true, and the position of the state in the rain shadow explains why it remains dry in this season; the state gets most of its rain from the north east monsoon instead.

Hence, Both [A] and [R] are true and [R] is the correct explanation of [A].
