Question

A question is followed by two statements numbered (I) and (II). You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and decide the appropriate answer.

Question:

Among 5 poles, W, O, K, G and Y each having a different height, which pole is the tallest?

Statements:

I. K is taller than only one pole. G is shorter than O but taller than W.

II. G is taller than Y.

The correct answer is

Both statements I and II together (and not statement I alone or statement II alone) are sufficient to answer the question.

Rank the five poles from shortest (1st) to tallest (5th). Statement I: K is taller than only one pole, so K is 2nd from the shortest; also O > G > W.

Statement I alone: Y is not placed. For example, W < K < G < O < Y and W < K < G < Y < O (or Y < K < W < G < O) all fit, giving Y or O as tallest, so Statement I alone is not sufficient.

Statement II alone: only G > Y is known, which says nothing about the tallest of five poles, so Statement II alone is not sufficient.

Both together: G is taller than W and Y, so G is taller than at least two poles and cannot be 1st or 2nd; K is 2nd and taller than only one pole, so G is also above K. So K is 2nd, W and Y fill the 1st and 3rd places, G is 4th from the shortest, and O, which is taller than G, is 5th, i.e. the tallest.

Check: whichever of W and Y is shortest, every condition holds (K above exactly one pole, W < G < O, Y < G), and in every such case O is on top, so the two statements together fix the tallest pole while neither does alone.

Hence, Both statements I and II together (and not statement I alone or statement II alone) are sufficient to answer the question.
