Question

In this question, a question is followed by two statements numbered (I) and (II). You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read both the statements and decide the appropriate answer.

Question:

Five people – Abeer, Charita, Dhruv, Eshika and Faris – are sitting in a straight line facing north. Who is sitting at the extreme left end?

Statements:

(I) Abeer sits immediately to the left of Charita, and Dhruv sits immediately to the left of Eshika.

(II) Faris sits immediately to the right of Eshika.

The correct answer is

Both statements I and II together are NOT sufficient to answer the question.

Statement (I) alone gives two blocks: Abeer–Charita and Dhruv–Eshika (left to right), plus Faris placed anywhere. The person at the left end could be Abeer, Dhruv or Faris, so (I) alone is not sufficient.

Statement (II) alone gives only the block Eshika–Faris; the other three people can be placed in many ways, so (II) alone is not sufficient.

Combining (I) and (II), the blocks become Abeer–Charita and Dhruv–Eshika–Faris. These two blocks can be placed in either order in the row of five seats.

Blocks AC then DEFAbeerCharitaDhruvEshikaFaris
Blocks DEF then ACDhruvEshikaFarisAbeerCharita

Both arrangements satisfy all the conditions, but the person at the extreme left end is Abeer in one and Dhruv in the other. So even together the statements cannot fix a single answer.

Check: in each arrangement Abeer is immediately left of Charita, Dhruv is immediately left of Eshika, and Faris is immediately right of Eshika – both are valid, yet they give different people at the left end.

Hence, Both statements I and II together are NOT sufficient to answer the question.
