Question

A number is increased by 20% and then decreased by 20%. What is the net change in the number?

This question was previously asked in
SSC CGL 2025 Tier 2 Paper 1 Question Paper (19-Jan-2026)
The correct answer is

4% decrease

Use the successive-percentage formula: net % change \(= a + b + \dfrac{ab}{100}\), with \(a = +20\) and \(b = -20\).

\(\text{Net} = 20 + (-20) + \dfrac{20 \times (-20)}{100} = 0 - 4 = -4\%\)

The minus sign means a decrease, so the number decreases by 4% — option (2).
