Current level of sales : 6000 units

Break-even point sales : 4000 units

What would be the DOL ?

The correct answer is

3.00

The degree of operating leverage (DOL) measures the percentage change in operating profit (EBIT) for a given percentage change in sales: \( \text{DOL} = \dfrac{\text{Contribution}}{\text{EBIT}} \).

With contribution per unit \( c \), fixed costs equal contribution at break-even, so \( \text{EBIT} = c(Q - Q_{BE}) \) and \( \text{DOL} = \dfrac{cQ}{c(Q - Q_{BE})} = \dfrac{Q}{Q - Q_{BE}} \).

Here \( Q = 6000 \) units and \( Q_{BE} = 4000 \) units: \( \text{DOL} = \dfrac{6000}{6000 - 4000} = \dfrac{6000}{2000} = 3.00 \).

Hence, 3.00.
