Question

A chemist is preparing a compound that contains sodium (Na), chlorine (Cl), and oxygen (O) in the formula NaClO3. If the atomic masses are: Na = 23 u, Cl = 35.5 u, and O = 16 u, then calculate the formula unit mass of NaClO3?

The correct answer is

106.5 u

Formula unit mass = sum of atomic masses of all atoms in one formula unit.

NaClO3 has 1 Na, 1 Cl and 3 O atoms.

\(= 23 + 35.5 + 3 \times 16 = 23 + 35.5 + 48 = 106.5\) u

Hence, the answer is 106.5 u.
