Question

N is a 3-digit number. The middle digit of N is equal to the sum of the other two digits and the sum of the digits is 10. How many such numbers (N) can be possible?

This question was previously asked in
CDS 2 2026 Maths Question Paper (13-Sep-2026)
The correct answer is

5

Let the digits of N be \(a,b,c\) (hundreds, tens, units) with \(b=a+c\) and \(a+b+c=10\). Substituting \(b=a+c\) gives \(2b=10 \Rightarrow b=5\), so \(a+c=5\) with \(a\geq1\) (leading digit). The valid pairs are \((a,c)=(1,4),(2,3),(3,2),(4,1),(5,0)\), giving the numbers 154, 253, 352, 451, 550 — 5 numbers in total.
