NIFT 2016 GAT Question Paper and Answer Key PDF
NIFT 2016 question paper is available as two parts, the GAT and the CAT. As the oldest paper here and a pre-NTA cycle, it has no public GAT answer key of the kind released recently. CAT is a drawing paper, so it has no answer key.

NIFT Exam Structure
NIFT exam has two written papers followed by a second stage. GAT is common to every course, while CAT is only for the two design courses, B.Des and M.Des. Shortlisted B.Des candidates then sit a Situation Test, and the masters courses sit an interview, so the paper you practise depends on your course.

NIFT GAT Sections
NIFT GAT comes from a fixed set of sub tests, and this mix has stayed broadly steady across the years. Design courses face the general aptitude sub tests, while the technology courses also get a case study. Knowing the sub-tests helps you read any year paper the same way.
● Quantitative Ability: percentages, ratio and proportion, interest, work and time, and distance.
● Communication Ability and English Comprehension: vocabulary, grammar and reading passages.
● Analytical Ability and Logical Ability: reasoning from given information.
● General Knowledge and Current Affairs: everyday awareness with a design and fashion focus.
● Case Study: an extra section for B.FTech, M.FTech and MFM, with engineering questions added for M.FTech.
NIFT Marking Scheme Across the Years
NIFT marking has changed over the past years, which matters when you practise from older papers. The design courses attempted freely for most of the years NIFT ran the exam, while the technology courses were penalised for wrong answers in the later cycles. From 2024, a quarter-mark penalty applies to every programme, and CAT has never carried negative marking.

For the objective GAT, a correct answer gives 1 mark and an unattempted question gives zero. Any question dropped for a technical error gives full marks to all candidates.
NIFT Useful Books and Resources
NIFT preparation splits between the aptitude GAT and the drawing CAT, so the resources differ for each. The GAT needs steady practice in quant, English and current affairs, while the CAT needs sketching, colour and composition work. Common resources are grouped by focus below.

NIFT Selection Process
NIFT selection has followed the same two stage structure across these years, even as the conducting body changed. Candidates first sit the written papers, and those shortlisted move to a second stage that depends on the course. The final rank uses a weighted mix of the written papers and the second stage.
● Stage one is the GAT for all courses, plus CAT for B.Des and M.Des.
● Shortlisted B.Des candidates sit the Situation Test, a hands-on model-making task.
● Masters candidates sit an interview, while B.FTech merit rests on the GAT alone.
● The final rank weighs GAT, CAT and the second stage, and the weights differ by course.
After the written stage, NIFT shortlists candidates for the Situation Test or interview, then prepares the merit list and runs centralised counselling for its campuses. Practising the year papers above builds the speed and accuracy that decide the written score, which is where most of the rank is won.
NIFT Previous Year Question Paper FAQs
Ques: How many years of NIFT question papers should I solve?
Ans: Solving the last four to five years is usually enough to learn the current pattern, since the format is steady. Start with a recent NTA-era paper, then work back for extra practice on the GAT sub-tests and the CAT.
Ques: Are NIFT answer keys available for every year?
Ans: No. A GAT answer key is available from 2023 onward, when NIFT and then NTA began releasing it. Older cycles have no public key, so those papers are best checked against reliable solved versions. CAT has no key in any year.
Ques: Do older NIFT papers still match the current exam?
Ans: The GAT and CAT structure is broadly the same, but older papers were English only and, for design courses, had no negative marking. The current paper is bilingual and penalises wrong answers for all courses, so use recent papers for the rules.
Ques: Which NIFT paper is best to start with?
Ans: Start with the most recent paper for your programme, since it matches the current medium and marking. Then use earlier years to build coverage and speed across the sub-tests.
