SSC JE 2020 contains two Papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 is an objective type test conducted in online mode whereas Paper 2 is a descriptive exam conducted in offline mode. The weightage of marks is also different in both papers i.e Paper 1 is of 200 marks and Paper 2 is of 300 marks. There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer applicable in Paper 1 only. 

The SSC JE 2020 paper I exam will be conducted from 27 to 30 October 2020 and on 11 December 2020 (only for Bihar applicants). On the other hand, the SSC JE Paper-II exam will be conducted on 21 March 2021

SSC JE Paper 1 consists of 200 questions to be attempted in a duration of 2 hours. The paper is divided into 3 sections – General Intelligence, General Awareness and General Engineering (Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical). Candidates have to appear in either one of the streams of General Engineering in both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Candidates can also download  practise papers to prepare for the exam.

SSC JE 2020 Exam Pattern

SSC JE 2020 is conducted in two papers i.e. paper 1 and paper 2. Paper 1 is an objective paper while Paper 2 is a descriptive paper. Given below is the detailed exam pattern for paper 1 and paper 2: 

SSC JE Paper 1 Pattern 

  • Paper 1 is a computer-based test having multiple-choice questions. 
  • It consists of 3 sections namely General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness and General Engineering (Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical).
  • Sections 1 and 2 are the same for each candidate. In section 3, candidates have to choose their respective subjects from Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical Engineering.
  • Section 1 and 2 consists of 50 questions each. These sections test the candidate’s ability and knowledge of general reasoning and awareness. Section 3 consists of 100 questions and examines the candidate’s knowledge for the subject chosen from Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrica Engineering.
  • In Paper-I and Paper-II for General Engineering, the candidate will be required to attempt only the part as per option given in the application form filled by the candidate.
  • In other words, the candidates appearing for the post of Junior Engineer (Civil or Quantity Surveying & Contracts) are required to attempt Part-A (Civil & Structural Engineering) 
  • Candidates appearing for the post of Junior Engineer (Electrical) are required to attempt Part-B (Electrical Engineering)  
  • Candidates appearing for the post of Junior Engineer (Mechanical) are required to attempt Part-C (Mechanical Engineering)
  • There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks per wrong answer.

SSC JE Paper 2 Pattern

  • Paper 2 is a descriptive paper conducted in pen and paper mode.
  • Candidates have to attempt a question paper of 300 marks in 2 hours.
  • Paper 2 is a conventional type exam, candidates have to choose the subject from Part A- Civil & Structural Engineering, Part B- Electrical Engineering or Part C- Mechanical Engineering.
  • Candidates are allowed to bring their own Slide–Rule, Calculator, Logarithm Table and Steam Table for Paper-II. 
  • There is no negative marking applicable in Paper-2.

This section in Paper 1 consists of 100 objections based on the stream opted by the candidate amongst Civil/ Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

SSC JE 2020 Important Instructions   

Given below are the important instructions for SSC JE 2020 candidates:

  • Candidate should reach the exam center 1 hour prior to the commencement of exam
  • Candidates must not forget to carry Admit Card on the day of the exam, it is required to enter the examination hall.
  • No electronic item is allowed in the examination hall.
  • No extra rough sheet is allowed in the examination hall. Margin will be given to do rough work in the test booklet.
  • Do not open the test booklet until and unless you are permitted to.
  • Fill the required details in the answer sheet. The result may not be evaluated if the details are not entered correctly.
  • Answer should be marked properly by darkening the circle in the OMR sheet.
  • Candidates should carefully listen to the instructions given by the invigilator.
  • Failure to follow instruction written in the examination will lead to disqualification.

Ques: Is there any negative marking SSC JE 2020 and what is the total time duration to complete the exam?

Ans: Yes, there is negative marking in Paper 1 i.e. 0.25 for every wrong answer will be deducted. The Paper 1 will be of 200 marks and total time duration to complete this paper is 2 hours. In case of Paper 2 there is no negative marking because this paper is descriptive type with a total of 300 marks and time duartion provided to complete this paper is 2 hours.

Hi Kunal. There is a lot of difference on both these post. In SSC JE post, candidates are selected as Junior engineer while IES exam is taken by UPSC to offer group A posts to the selected candidates. For more details, you can refer to the official website.
