Why do fruit plants need to be propagated vegetatively? Explain the advantages and disadvantages of asexual and sexual propagation.

Fruit plants often need to be propagated vegetatively (asexually) for several crucial reasons. Firstly, most cultivated fruit varieties are highly heterozygous, meaning their seeds (produced sexually) would not breed true, resulting in offspring with undesirable genetic combinations and varied fruit quality. Secondly, many superior fruit varieties are sterile or produce non-viable seeds. Thirdly, vegetative propagation ensures the genetic exactness (cloning) of a desirable parent plant, guaranteeing that the offspring retain specific traits like superior fruit quality, yield, taste, and disease resistance. Lastly, it allows the use of rootstocks for disease resistance, dwarfism, or adaptability to specific soil conditions, which cannot be achieved through seeds.

Advantages of Asexual (Vegetative) Propagation:

  1. True-to-Type: Offspring are genetically identical clones, preserving all desirable parental characteristics.

  2. Faster Fruiting: Plants mature and bear fruit much earlier than those grown from seed, reducing the juvenile period.

  3. Uniformity: Leads to uniform plant growth, fruit quality, and harvest time in an orchard.

  4. Rootstock Benefits: Allows for the combination of desirable scion (fruit-producing part) with advantageous rootstock traits.

  5. Overcomes Seed Issues: Useful for plants that don't produce viable seeds or have long seed dormancy.

Disadvantages of Asexual (Vegetative) Propagation:

  1. No Genetic Variation: Lack of genetic diversity makes the entire population susceptible to new pests or diseases.

  2. Bulky and Costly: Propagating materials (cuttings, grafts) are often bulky and more expensive to produce and transport than seeds.

  3. Disease Transmission: Diseases present in the mother plant can be directly transmitted to the offspring.

  4. Requires Skill: Techniques like grafting or budding require specialized skills.

Advantages of Sexual (Seed) Propagation:

  1. Genetic Variation: Produces diverse offspring, providing raw material for breeding new varieties and enhancing adaptability.

  2. Ease of Storage and Transport: Seeds are compact, easy to store for long periods, and simple to transport over distances.

  3. Disease Avoidance: Can avoid transmission of certain diseases carried in vegetative parts.

  4. Stronger Root System: Seedlings often develop a strong taproot, providing better anchorage and drought tolerance.

Disadvantages of Sexual (Seed) Propagation:

  1. Genetic Variability: Does not breed true-to-type, often losing desirable parental traits.

  2. Long Juvenile Period: Plants take longer to reach maturity and bear fruit.

  3. Seed Dormancy/Viability: Some seeds have dormancy issues or low viability.

  4. Not All Plants: Some plants do not produce viable seeds or are sterile.
