Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) is a plant breeding technique where molecular markers (DNA sequences) tightly linked to a gene or quantitative trait locus (QTL) of interest are used to select individuals with desirable traits indirectly. This bypasses laborious phenotypic evaluation. Examples include selecting for disease resistance or grain quality.

Applications:

  1. Recurrent Selection: MAS streamlines recurrent selection by accurately identifying desirable genotypes in early generations, accelerating cycles and enhancing selection efficiency.

  2. Gene Pyramiding: It enables precise stacking of multiple desirable genes (e.g., several resistance genes against different pathogens) into a single elite variety. Breeders use markers for each gene to select individuals carrying all target genes, which is difficult phenotypically.

  3. QTL Introgression: MAS facilitates the efficient transfer of specific QTLs (regions associated with complex traits) from a donor parent to a recipient variety. Markers linked to the QTL allow for precise selection while minimizing "linkage drag"—the transfer of undesirable genes alongside the target QTL.
