Black soil

Black soil, also called regur or black cotton soil, is formed from weathered volcanic (basaltic) lava and is rich in clay, lime, iron and magnesium.

Its high clay content makes it highly moisture-retentive, so it stays damp for long periods and swells when wet and cracks when dry, which helps aerate it. These properties make it ideally suited to cotton cultivation, especially in the Deccan plateau region.

Sandy soil drains too quickly to hold moisture, while red and laterite soils are generally less fertile and moisture-retentive for cotton.

Hence, the soil ideal for cotton cultivation is black soil.
