The correct answer is

(a)

A compound sentence joins two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). The conjunction must also show the correct logical relation between the clauses.

Here the two ideas contrast: she wanted a walk, yet the heavy rain prevented it. The coordinating conjunction of contrast is “but”, so sentence (a) is right, with a comma before “but”.

Sentence (b) uses “therefore”, a conjunctive adverb, and wrongly makes the rain a result of her wish. Sentence (c) uses “and”, which merely adds the ideas and misses the contrast. Sentence (d) uses “because”, a subordinating conjunction that makes a complex sentence and wrongly states that the rain caused her wish.

(a) option is correct.
