Question

Assertion [A]: A novel supramolecular hydrogel which is injectable could be used for precise and targeted drug delivery to destroy breast cancer cells.

Reason [R]: It is semisolid under normal conditions, it melts when pressure is applied. But soon after coming out of the needle, it becomes a gel again.

The correct answer is

Both [A] and [R] are true, and [R] is the correct explanation of [A]

A supramolecular hydrogel is a water-rich network held together by weak, reversible (non-covalent) bonds instead of permanent chemical cross-links. Indian researchers reported such an injectable hydrogel in 2025 for localised treatment of breast tumours.

The Assertion is true: the gel is loaded with anticancer drugs, injected directly at the tumour site and releases the drug slowly there, so the medicine acts precisely on cancer cells and spares healthy tissue.

The Reason is also true: because its bonds are reversible, the gel thins and flows when pressure is applied in the syringe (shear-thinning) and sets back into a gel as soon as it leaves the needle (self-healing).

This gel-to-liquid-to-gel behaviour is exactly what makes the material injectable and lets it stay as a depot at the tumour, so the Reason explains the Assertion.

Both [A] and [R] are true, and [R] is the correct explanation of [A] option is correct.
