Gas in Soda Water

Soda water is essentially water infused with a gas under pressure, a process called carbonation.

The specific gas used to create the characteristic fizz and bubbles in soda water is carbon dioxide. Its chemical formula is $\text{CO}_2$.

Carbonation Process

Carbon dioxide gas ($\text{CO}_2$) is dissolved into water at high pressure. When the pressure is released (like when opening the bottle or can), the gas comes out of solution, forming bubbles.

Why Not Other Gases?

• Hydrogen ($H_2$): Highly flammable and not suitable for beverages.
• Nitrogen ($N_2$): Sometimes used in drinks like stout beer for a creamy head, but not the primary gas for typical soda fizz.
• Freon: A type of refrigerant, harmful if ingested, and environmentally damaging. Not used in food products.

Therefore, carbon dioxide is the standard and essential gas found in soda water.
