Gas Used in Wick-Type Lighters

Wick-type lighters commonly use Butane as the fuel gas.

Why Butane?

Butane ($C_4H_{10}$) is a hydrocarbon that is part of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). It is chosen for lighters due to its specific properties:

• High Flammability: Butane burns readily, producing a flame suitable for lighting.
• Liquefaction: At room temperature, it can be easily liquefied under moderate pressure. This allows a large amount of fuel to be stored in the small space of a lighter in liquid form, vaporizing as needed for combustion.
• Controlled Burn: It provides a consistent and controllable flame.

Other Gas Options

The other gases listed are less suitable for wick-type lighters:

• Nitrogen ($N_2$): An inert gas, meaning it does not burn and cannot be used as fuel.
• Methane ($CH_4$): While flammable, it is the primary component of natural gas and is harder to liquefy under the pressures typically used in lighters compared to butane.
• Helium ($He$): An inert gas with very low energy density, making it unsuitable as a fuel.

Therefore, butane's ability to be easily liquefied and its high flammability make it the ideal choice for portable fuel devices like wick-type lighters.
