Biological and chemical nutrient removal

Nitrogen and phosphorus are the two main nutrients that cause eutrophication, and removing both efficiently needs a combined strategy.

Biological nutrient removal uses microbes for nitrification–denitrification (nitrogen) and enhanced biological phosphorus uptake, while chemical dosing (for example alum or ferric salts) precipitates the remaining phosphorus. Together this biological and chemical nutrient removal targets both nutrients at once.

UV disinfection only kills pathogens, and simple sedimentation or aeration alone does not reliably strip both nutrients, so the combined biological–chemical route is the most effective.
