Which Act allowed the British colonial government to detain political prisoners without trial for two years ?
Rowlatt Act
The Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes Act of March 1919, popularly called the Rowlatt Act after the Sedition Committee chaired by Justice Sidney Rowlatt, empowered the government to imprison suspects without trial for up to two years.
It was condemned as the “Black Act” (no appeal, no vakil, no daleel) and led Gandhi to launch the Rowlatt Satyagraha in April 1919, his first all-India protest.
The Arms Act (1878) restricted Indians from keeping weapons without a licence; the Vernacular Press Act (1878) curbed Indian-language newspapers; the Indian Councils Acts (1861, 1892, 1909) dealt with legislative councils. None of them provided for two-year detention without trial.
