What message does Naladiyar conveys through this line “Neeroliya Palun Kurukin therinthu”? (Like the swan that leaving the water drinks the milk)
Learning good books by removing bad ones
The line closes Naladiyar verse 135 in the section on learning: "Kalvi karaiyila karpavar naalsila … thellithin aaraaynthu amaivudaiya karpave neeroliyap paalun kurukin therinthu".
The verse says that learning has no shore while human life is short and full of troubles; so the wise should carefully examine books, reject the useless ones and learn only the worthy ones, just as the swan is believed to separate milk from water and drink only the milk.
The literal act of drinking milk without water is only the simile, not the message. Learning books that resemble milk and water mixes good and bad, the opposite of the advice. Living according to good books is a separate idea and not what this line stresses; the line is about choosing what to learn.
Learning good books by removing bad ones option is correct.
