Question

What is sea surface temperature rise? How does it affect the formation of tropical cyclones?

This question was previously asked in
UPSC CSE 2024 (Prelims) CSAT Previous Year Paper (16-Jun-2024)

Sea surface temperature (SST) rise refers to the sustained increase in the average temperature of the ocean's uppermost layer. Primarily driven by climate change and the absorption of excess heat from greenhouse gas emissions, our oceans have become a significant heat sink.

This warming has profound implications for tropical cyclones, which draw their immense energy directly from warm ocean waters (typically above 26.5°C). As SSTs climb, the ocean provides a larger reservoir of thermal energy and moisture, essentially "fueling" these storms. Consequently, we observe a tendency towards more intense cyclones, capable of more rapid intensification. Warmer oceans also mean more moisture evaporates into the atmosphere, leading to significantly heavier rainfall and increased flood risk upon landfall. This heightened energy availability translates to a greater potential for destructive power, posing amplified threats to coastal communities and infrastructure.
