The Pallavas of Kanchi, who held sway from the 4th to the 9th century CE, made monumental contributions to the art and literature of South India, effectively laying the cultural bedrock for future dynasties. Their reign is considered a golden age, leaving an indelible mark on the region's heritage.
In the realm of art, the Pallavas were pioneers of Dravidian architecture. They initiated the transition from rock-cut cave temples to magnificent free-standing structural temples. The initial phase under rulers like Mahendravarman I saw the creation of rock-cut mandapas. This evolved under Narasimhavarman I into the famous monolithic Rathas and the breathtaking open-air bas-relief, the 'Descent of the Ganges' at Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram). Later, the Shore Temple at Mamallapuram and the Kailasanatha Temple at Kanchipuram, built during the reign of Narasimhavarman II (Rajasimha), became iconic examples of their structural temple architecture.
The Pallava court was also a vibrant hub for literature, fostering both Sanskrit and Tamil. Kanchipuram, their capital, was a renowned center of learning. The Pallava king Mahendravarman I was himself a scholar and authored the Sanskrit satirical play, Mattavilasa Prahasana. Their patronage was crucial for the Bhakti movement, supporting the Nayanmars (Saivite saints) and Alvars (Vaishnavite saints), whose devotional hymns in Tamil enriched the region's literary and religious life. This dual patronage helped in the evolution of the Grantha script, used for writing Sanskrit in the Tamil country.
