How far was the Industrial Revolution in England responsible for the decline of handicrafts and cottage industries in India?

The Industrial Revolution in England was the primary and most decisive factor responsible for the catastrophic decline of India's traditional handicrafts and cottage industries. Before the British consolidation of power, Indian textiles and crafts were celebrated globally for their quality and finesse.

The Industrial Revolution as the Main Catalyst:

At the heart of this decline was the influx of cheap, machine-made goods from British factories. The technological advancements in England, like the power loom and steam engine, enabled mass production at a scale and price that Indian artisans, with their traditional tools and methods, simply could not compete with.

This economic assault was systematically aided by the British colonial state's policies:

  1. One-Way Free Trade: British goods entered India with nominal or zero import duties. In contrast, heavy tariffs were imposed on Indian textiles entering Britain, effectively closing off a major export market and protecting their own industries.
  2. Transformation of the Economy: India was strategically converted from a manufacturing hub into a supplier of raw materials, such as raw cotton, for British mills and a captive market for their finished products.
  3. Infrastructure for Exploitation: The development of railways, while seemingly modernizing, was primarily aimed at facilitating the transport of raw materials from the hinterland to the ports and distributing British goods back into these remote markets, further stifling local production.

Other Contributing Factors:

While the Industrial Revolution was the main engine of this decline, its impact was magnified by other factors. The disappearance of royal courts and princely patronage after the annexation of Indian states deprived artisans of their most valuable clientele. Furthermore, a new English-educated Indian class emerged that often favoured western goods and lifestyles, further shrinking the domestic market for traditional crafts.

In conclusion, while internal factors like the loss of patronage played a role, they were secondary. The Industrial Revolution, weaponized by protectionist and predatory colonial policies, was overwhelmingly responsible for dismantling India's famed artisanal economy and triggering its de-industrialization.
