In the complex and strategic game of chess, the term checkmate represents a definitive conclusion. It's a situation every player aims to achieve or avoid.

What Checkmate Means in Chess

Checkmate occurs when a player's king is under immediate attack (in check) and there is absolutely no legal move that player can make to remove the threat. To escape a check, a player must:

• Move the king to a square where it is no longer under attack.
• Block the attacking piece with another one of their own pieces.
• Capture the piece that is delivering the check.

If a player is in check, but none of these three options are possible, then their king is checkmated.

The Result of Checkmate

A checkmate directly signifies the end of the game. The player whose king is checkmated loses the match, and the player who delivered the checkmate wins.

Why Other Options Are Incorrect

Let's clarify why the other choices aren't the best definition:

• Invalid move: Checkmate results from a sequence of legal moves. It is not itself an illegal action on the board.
• A draw: While chess can end in a draw (stalemate, agreement, etc.), checkmate is a decisive outcome leading to a win for one side and a loss for the other. Stalemate is a type of draw where the king is NOT in check, but has no legal moves.
• A win: Although checkmate results in a win for one player, the term itself describes the specific game state – the inescapable threat to the king – which concludes the game. "End of game" is a more fundamental description of this state.

Therefore, checkmate is fundamentally the condition that brings the chess game to its definitive conclusion, resulting in a win for the attacker and a loss for the defender.
