Vedic society, as depicted in the Vedic texts, was initially semi-nomadic and pastoral during the Rigvedic period, centered on cattle wealth. It later evolved into a settled agrarian economy in the Later Vedic age. The fundamental social unit was the patriarchal family or kula, where the eldest male, the grihapati, held authority over property and family members. Politically, society was organized into tribes (jana), governed by tribal assemblies like the Sabha (council of elders) and Samiti (general tribal assembly), which held significant deliberative and military powers. A defining social feature was the Varna system, which in the early phase was a flexible classification based on occupation (karma) into Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (merchants/farmers), and Shudras (labourers).

Religiously, the Vedic people practiced a form of naturalistic polytheism, worshipping personified forces of nature. Key deities included Indra (god of war and rain), Agni (god of fire, an intermediary), Varuna (upholder of cosmic order), and Surya (the sun god). The primary mode of worship was the performance of sacrifices or yajnas. These were elaborate rituals involving offerings like ghee and grain into a consecrated fire, accompanied by the chanting of hymns from the Vedas to appease the gods and seek blessings for prosperity, health, and victory.

Yes, profound echoes of these features persist in modern India. The Varna system, despite its initial flexibility, hardened into a rigid, hereditary caste (jati) system that continues to be a powerful, albeit challenged, force in social stratification, marriage (endogamy), and politics. The patriarchal family structure remains a dominant norm, influencing inheritance laws and gender roles. Most strikingly, Vedic rituals have shown remarkable continuity. The sacred fire (havan or homa) is central to many Hindu ceremonies like weddings (vivaha) and housewarmings (griha pravesha), and Vedic chants and mantras are still recited, demonstrating a direct and living link to the ancient Vedic tradition.
