Question

Unsaturated hydrocarbons usually undergo which of the following reaction mechanisms?

This question was previously asked in
RRB Group D 2025 Question Paper (18-Aug-2026) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

Addition

Unsaturated hydrocarbons (alkenes and alkynes) contain carbon–carbon double or triple bonds. The pi bonds in these multiple bonds are electron-rich and relatively reactive, so small molecules such as H2, X2, HX or H2O can add across the double or triple bond, converting it into a single bond.

This addition mechanism is the characteristic reaction of alkenes and alkynes (for example CH2=CH2 + Br2 → CH2BrCH2Br). Combustion is common to almost all hydrocarbons and not specific, substitution is the hallmark reaction of saturated alkanes, and neutralisation is an acid–base reaction that hydrocarbons do not undergo.

Hence, the answer is Addition.
