The developmental state model emerged in post-colonial contexts, where governments assumed a central role in economic planning, industrialization, and welfare. This emphasis was understandable given weak private sectors and urgent developmental needs. However, critics argue that the State’s role has often been overemphasized, leading to inefficiencies and distortions.

Excessive state control frequently resulted in bureaucratic red tape, rent-seeking, and inefficiency in resource allocation. Public enterprises often turned into fiscal burdens rather than engines of growth. By monopolizing development, the State crowded out private initiative and innovation. Furthermore, centralization of power weakened accountability and democratic participation.

With globalization and neo-liberal reforms, the limitations of state-centric models became evident. The rise of markets, civil society, and global institutions demonstrated that development is best achieved through partnerships rather than state dominance. Yet, complete retreat of the State is also problematic, as markets alone cannot ensure equity and social justice.

Thus, the critique is partially justified. The State’s role was indeed exaggerated, but its responsibilities in regulation, welfare, and providing public goods remain indispensable. The challenge lies in balancing state intervention with enabling roles for markets and communities.
