Question

The following are the demand and supply equations in a perfectly competitive market :

\(P = 12 + 0.3\ Q_s\)

\(P = 40 - 0.4\ Q_d\)

The equilibrium market price would be :

UGC NET 2015 Paper 1 Question Paper (27-Dec-2015)
The correct answer is

24

In a perfectly competitive market the equilibrium price is set where quantity supplied equals quantity demanded, \(Q_s = Q_d = Q\), so the two price equations give the same P.

Equate the two: \(12 + 0.3Q = 40 - 0.4Q\) ⇒ \(0.7Q = 28\) ⇒ \(Q = 40\).

Substitute in the supply equation: \(P = 12 + 0.3(40) = 12 + 12 = 24\). Check with demand: \(P = 40 - 0.4(40) = 40 - 16 = 24\).

So the market clears at a quantity of 40 units and a price of 24.

Hence, the answer is 24.
