UGC NET 2014 Paper 1 Question Paper (28-Dec-2014)
The correct answer is

Both (A) and (R) are true.

Assertion: a monopolist is the only seller, so it faces the entire market demand curve. To sell more it must lower its price, so its average revenue (demand) curve slopes downward from left to right, with the marginal revenue curve below it. A is true.

Reason: because the monopolist faces a given demand curve, it can fix either the price or the quantity, but not both independently. If it sets the price, buyers decide how much is bought; if it sets output, demand decides the price at which that output sells. R is true.

R is really the other side of A: the downward-sloping demand curve is what ties price and quantity together, so even a monopolist cannot act on whim in both. The codes here only ask whether each part is true, and both are.

Hence, Both (A) and (R) are true.
