Genetic engineering
NCERT names two core techniques that enabled modern biotechnology: genetic engineering and bioprocess engineering. Genetic engineering is defined as techniques to alter the chemistry of genetic material (DNA and RNA), to introduce these into host organisms and thus change the phenotype of the host organism.
The stem restates this definition, so it describes genetic engineering, which works through recombinant DNA, gene cloning and gene transfer.
Bioprocess engineering is the maintenance of a sterile, contamination-free environment in chemical engineering processes so that only the desired microbe or eukaryotic cell grows in large quantities for making products such as antibiotics, vaccines and enzymes. Cloning is the making of multiple identical copies of a DNA template, and transformation is the process by which a cell takes up foreign DNA; each is only one step within genetic engineering, not the whole technique.
