About the work. Afif’s history is the fullest account of the reign of Firoz Shah Tughlaq (1351–88), written some years after the Sultan’s death. It describes his administration in unusual detail — the canals dug from the Yamuna and the Sutlej, the new towns of Firozabad, Hisar-Firoza, Jaunpur and Fatehabad, the Diwan-i-Khairat for the poor and the Diwan-i-Istihqaq for pensions, the employment department, the hospital or Dar-ul-Shifa, and the Sultan’s revival of hereditary iqtas and his large establishment of slaves.

A caution worth noting. Two chroniclers wrote books titled Tarikh-i-Firuz Shahi, Barani and Afif. Barani’s ends early in Firoz Shah’s reign; Afif’s covers it entire. Since Barani is not among the options, Afif is the answer here, but the coincidence of title is a genuine trap in questions of this kind.
Why such works matter. Persian court chronicles are the principal narrative source for the Delhi Sultanate, but they were written by men in or near the court and are frankly partisan. Historians read them for administrative detail and chronology while discounting their judgments — Barani in particular writes as a moralist advising rulers rather than as a recorder of events.
