What the book is. The Chach Nama, also called Fateh Nama Sindh, is the principal narrative source for the Arab conquest of Sindh. It tells the story of the Brahmin dynasty founded by Chach of Alor, the reign of his son Dahir, and the invasion of 712 CE by Muhammad bin Qasim on behalf of Hajjaj bin Yusuf, the Umayyad governor of Iraq.
How it reached us. The work was originally in Arabic. Early in the thirteenth century, about 1216 CE, Ali Kufi translated it into Persian while at Uch and Bhakkar in Sindh, and dedicated it to a minister of Nasiruddin Qabacha, the ruler of Multan and Sindh. The Arabic original is lost, so the Persian translation is the only version that survives — which is why the translator’s name is asked about at all.

Its value and its limits. Historians use the Chach Nama for the political geography of eighth-century Sindh and for the terms on which Hindu and Buddhist subjects were governed after the conquest. Because it was compiled five centuries after the events, however, it is treated as a work shaped by thirteenth-century concerns as much as a straightforward chronicle.
