Question

"Spatial distribution of religious groups in India does not show any specific pattern." Illustrate with arguments.

This question was previously asked in
UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

India’s religious groups are unevenly distributed due to historical, cultural, and migration factors. Hindus dominate most states, yet Muslims are concentrated in Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, Kerala, and Assam. Christians are primarily in northeastern states like Nagaland and Meghalaya, and Kerala. Sikhs are concentrated in Punjab, while Buddhists are prominent in Maharashtra and Ladakh. Jains are concentrated in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

The distribution lacks a uniform or linear spatial pattern, reflecting historical settlement, trade routes, conversion patterns, and demographic growth. Urban centers often have religious diversity, whereas rural areas are more homogeneous. This uneven pattern shows India’s pluralistic character shaped by geography, culture, and historical developments, rather than a systematic spatial arrangement.
