Is North East India a geo-political or geo-cultural region? Justify your answer.

UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

North East India can be considered both a geo-political and geo-cultural region, but its identity is strongly geo-cultural. The region, comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura, is characterized by ethnic diversity, tribal populations, unique languages, and cultural practices, reflecting a strong geo-cultural identity. Traditional social systems, festivals, and settlement patterns further emphasize cultural cohesion.

Geo-politically, its strategic location bordering China, Myanmar, Bhutan, and Bangladesh gives it importance in national security, infrastructure, and border management. Insurgencies and demands for autonomy highlight political challenges. However, the unifying factor remains culture, as tribal identity and traditional governance shape social and economic interactions. Thus, while geopolitical considerations exist, North East India is primarily a geo-cultural region with geo-political significance.
