In the following passage, some words have been deleted. Read the passage carefully and select the most appropriate option to fill in each blank. The subjective experience of happiness eludes (1)_____ description and can only be apprehended through the nonverbal manifestation of a (2)______. Similarly, happiness serves as an indicator or marker of a positive and (3)_____ existence. (4)______ happiness is a straightforward process, yet articulating its essence proves to be a (5)______ task.
Select the most appropriate option to fill in blank number 5.
challenging
The sentence: ‘yet articulating its essence proves to be a (5)______ task.’
The connector yet signals a contrast with the first half, which said that experiencing happiness is ‘a straightforward process’. The second half must therefore describe something difficult.
Challenging means demanding and difficult, so ‘a challenging task’ completes the contrast exactly.
Why the others fail:
Easy — would repeat the sense of ‘straightforward’ and leave yet with nothing to contrast. The sentence would collapse into a statement joined by a contrast word for no reason.
Epistemic — means relating to knowledge. It describes the kind of task rather than its difficulty, so the contrast again disappears.
Covetous — greedily desiring what belongs to another. This describes a person, and cannot describe a task at all.
Note how E69 and E70 work together: both blanks sit in one sentence built on yet. Solving either one confirms the other.
