Question

Read the following statements marked as Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Choose the correct option:

Assertion (A): Spark Torch Igniters are being increasingly incorporated into advanced rocket engine designs for next-generation launch vehicles.

Reason (R): They provide superior multi-restart capability and consistent, reliable ignition in extreme conditions, allowing for more complex mission profiles and enabling engine reusability.

SSC CPO 2025 Paper 1 Question Paper (9-Dec-2025) (Shift 2)
The correct answer is

Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A

Assertion (A) is true. Spark torch igniters are being adopted in modern liquid and cryogenic rocket engines for next-generation launch vehicles (ISRO, for example, has qualified such an igniter for engines with multiple-restart needs).

Reason (R) is also true. A spark torch igniter uses an electric spark to light a small torch of propellant, which then ignites the main chamber. Unlike one-shot pyrotechnic igniters, it can be fired again and again, giving reliable ignition in vacuum and at very low temperatures.

This repeatable, dependable ignition is precisely what enables multiple engine restarts, complex mission profiles (placing satellites in different orbits) and reusable engines, so R explains why A is happening.

Hence, both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
