Plato did not restrict dialectic to .................. .
Opposition
Before Plato, dialectic was essentially the art of opposition: Zeno of Elea refuted opponents by deriving contradictory consequences from their theses, the Sophists practised antilogic (arguing both opposed sides of a case), and Socratic elenchus exposed contradictions in an interlocutor's beliefs.
Plato did not restrict dialectic to this play of opposed arguments. In the Republic dialectic becomes the highest method of knowledge, which rises through examination and reasoning from hypotheses to the unhypothetical first principle, the Form of the Good; in later dialogues (Phaedrus, Sophist, Statesman) it also includes collection and division of Forms.
Thus examination, reasoning and division are all parts of Platonic dialectic itself, whereas mere opposition or refutation is what he goes beyond.
Hence, the answer is Opposition.
