UPSC CSE 2021 (Prelims) CSAT Previous Year Paper (10-Oct-2021)

The year 2021 witnessed notable global volcanic activity, causing significant regional environmental impacts. The prolonged Cumbre Vieja eruption in La Palma, Spain, saw vast lava flows inundating vast swathes of land, destroying homes, infrastructure, and invaluable agricultural areas. Ashfall impacted air quality and vegetation, while lava entering the ocean altered marine ecosystems.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mount Nyiragongo's sudden eruption produced rapid lava flows that devastated communities on Goma's outskirts, displacing thousands and posing risks from toxic gas emissions.

Indonesia's Mount Semeru experienced a powerful eruption, generating destructive pyroclastic flows and subsequent lahars (volcanic mudflows) that buried villages and farmlands. These events collectively led to widespread ecological disruption, compromised air and water quality, substantial land-use changes, and altered local hydrological systems, demanding extensive recovery efforts.
